Resident.Evil.7.Biohazard-CPY Crack
In recent times, however, the company has found itself under increasing pressure. In August 2016, cracking group CONSPIR4CY (CPY) dumped a Denuvo-removed version of Rise of the Tomb Raider on torrent sites, some five months after its release. Despite the long delay, it was a landmark moment. Denuvo had been defeated.
In its defense, Denuvo has never marketed its product as an uncrackable system. The plan, the company insists, is to give games producers a piracy-free window of opportunity, from the day of launch to some undefined point in the future. Protecting those lucrative early months from pirates is the aim.
The Resident Evil 7 crack is notable for how quickly it came after the game's legitimate release. Denuvo copy-protection relies on specific triggers inserted into the executable game code, and those triggers are placed differently in each protected game. This makes it hard to release any sort of generalized tool that will quickly crack all Denuvo-protected games. Instead, the Denuvo cracking process can require a lot of nitty-gritty manual searching through game data for each individual title.
In the past, this cracking process has taken anywhere from a few weeks to a matter of months after the game's first release. Resident Evil 7 being cracked in less than a week is a significant milestone for the crackers, one that could have big business impacts for Denuvo-protected games.
Since game sales tend to be front-loaded near the initial release date, every day a game can exist on the market in an "uncracked" state is important to publishers who believe that piracy negatively impacts legitimate sales. DRM that can effectively protect a game for a few weeks or months can be nearly as valuable to a publisher as copy protection that is literally never broken.
We saw last month that some publishers started removing Denuvo protections from their cracked games well after the fact, possibly triggering reported refund clauses in Denuvo contracts (Denuvo has not responded to a request for comment on this from Ars Technica). If Denuvo protection is no longer good for even a week, we could see more publishers balking at the costs associated with what used to be best-in-class copy protection.
Over the last 18 months or so, Denuvo has been a huge help for game publishers and a huge headache for game crackers. However, it looks like the DRM's effectiveness is starting to slip as Resident Evil 7 has been cracked in record time, leaving pirates with access to the game just five days after its initial release on PC.
Denuvo used to be an ironclad solution for publishers but now, cracks to games can usually be expected a few months after its initial release. Still, this launch-window protection is enough to make Denuvo worth the investment for most triple-A developers. Unfortunately, Capcom won't be enjoying that level of protection, as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard cracks have begun showing up on torrent sites less than a week after the game's launch.
Cracking group CPY has been the first to unlock Resident Evil 7. This is also the same group that dropped the first cracked version of Rise of the Tomb Raider back in August 2016, some time after its initial release.
Denuvo is still a tough system to crack though and may remain useful for other games in the future. Dishonored 2 has yet to be cracked and groups never got around to cracking Just Cause 3, though that game may not be relevant enough at this point.
Capcom, the publisher of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, received some rather disappointing news this week. The PC version of the game has already been cracked, with its Denuvo anti-piracy software being defeated by hackers in record time. We have to remember that Resident Evil 7 was just released this past Tuesday, so the crack was deployed in less than one week. Credit for cracking the game goes to CONSPIR4CY (CPY), which in the past has successfully cracked other Denuvo-enabled games including Rise of the Tomb Raider, Doom and Watch Dogs 2. 2ff7e9595c
